Thematic Map


Thematic maps are designed to show a certain theme or idea that is connected with a specific place. They can show physical, social, cultural, agricultural, etc., of any city, state, etc. This map shows population change in the United States during the years 1990-1996.

Topographic Map


A topographic map is a type of map that has large scale detail, relief and contour lines. Many also show both natural and man made features. This map was created by the USGS and is of Stowe, Vermont.

Planimetric Map


A planimetric map is a type of topographic map. Topographic maps are characterized by detail and relief. A planimetric map differs from a topographic map, in that, it does not show elevations. This map is of China made by the Japanese Expeditionary Forces in 1932 to show a Chinese city and the irrigation system.

Mental maps are a person's representation of their own reality. Mental maps are usually studied by geographers in order to find out citizen's personal preferences. They are also used for simple things like driving directions.
